Pretty much this. Faction warfare is supposed to be a stepping stone to 0.0 warfare. Not necessarily an equally attractive alternative. I think the message CCP is trying to send is: if you can already hold your own ground in 0.0, then please stay there or let someone else have it if you want to move into the factional warfare world. ---

too many topics about the same thing
I notice you're doing the same thing I am, except you use quotes. I should copy that... ---

I imagine that huge, self-sufficient sovereign states/empires spanning hundreds of systems would prefer to do things alone. Just a thought. ---

Alliance-bound RP-PvPers CAN join the faction warfare. You just have to leave the alliance. You can still maintain ties with your alliance, maintain friendships, and even continue flying alongside your corp-mates. Just do it under a faction banner instead of the alliance one and you'll be fine right?
The only ones I can see having trouble is CVA. All the other alliances can participate in faction warfare without any sacrifices. ---

You haven't read a single word have you?
What is lost isn't just about 0.0 space (CVA) it's about co-operation and identity, the roles built up together over YEARS of playing.
Players are proud of their corps, their alliances, their achievements in those groups. In EVE who you are and what you do has a legacy and a reputation, you're asking groups that have been in EVE for 5 years to give up every achievement because CCP couldn't come up with a better mechanic to include them.
Can't they just move their entire corporation and alliance into the faction without losing any internal structure or history? If not, then yes, CCP should address that. I was under the impression that the only thing lost is 0.0 assets. Beyond that, you could maintain existing player structures, just with the NPCs calling the shots from the top.
Edit: Besides, I expect the empires don't want sovereign allies anyways(that's what an independent alliance like CVA is). You are either a soldier in the empire, or you're not. ---

@Ryas:
If that's the case, then don't join a faction. If your loyalty to a sovereign state (again, this is what every alliance pretty much is) is greater than your loyalty to one of the factions (the biggest sovereign states) then maybe you don't want to participate in faction warfare after all? Just a thought.
Personally, I would like for RPers to have the opportunity to enjoy faction warfare without all this trouble. I expect that the current proposal for faction warfare will not be what is implemented. CCP has definitely heard the community on these issues, and faction warfare should be much more RP-friendly in the future. Let's just wait and see I guess. ---

How about pretending your alliance never disbanded, but instead "joined" the relevant faction. Seriously, is it that hard to role-play an explanation as to why you now take orders from NPC's? Because that's what faction warfare seems like (which, granted, may change a lot in the near future). Isn't that what role-players do best? ---

I've changed my mind a bit on this issue. As far as I can tell now, RP alliances are not sovereign states. Instead, they are loosely tied under the factions already. Therefore, RP alliances are not like all other alliances (which are, in fact, sovereign states). The factions themselves are essentially alliances (that is, sovereign states). Therefore, RP alliances are a lot closer to being corporations than alliances. However, within them there are corporations (sort of like how Goonfleet, a corporation, is further sub-divided into individual squads with different identities of their own). So, instead of alliances joining factions as a single entity, why not have the member corporations of an RP alliance join the faction and then create a chat/communication system between them similar to that which they enjoyed as a player alliance. The corporations remain the same corporations. They get to join faction warfare. And the RP alliance is still together in some form.
Or am I just missing the mark completely? I suppose this would all be easily solved if factions were made an organizational step higher than alliances, instead of being on par with them. ---

Originally by: Octavinus Augustus What we fear happening here is that CCP implements some game mechanics that does not allow us to fight for our various causes. In the example above it would be similar to CCP implementing a piece of code not allowing IAC, AAA, FIX and MC to target either BoB or Goons and then saying: "Well, if you want to fight this war you should join one of the involved alliances".
Good point. I can understand and sympathize with this line of reasoning, and I look forward to seeing if CCP implements a game mechanic allowing RP alliances to at least have a role in faction warfare, to be able to fight for the 'cause without sacrificing their identity. Perhaps allowing player alliances and the factions to negotiate official standings (a bit difficult, since one side is NPCs), or allowing alliances to war-dec a faction. In exchange, they can experience the same drawbacks as the faction forces involved.
Edit: A problem that springs to mind though is we might end up seeing large-scale alliance-quality PvP brought into Faction Warfare. CCP seems to want the exact opposite: small gang fights. ---

No? I think you just don't get roleplayers so quite frankly go debate something you have a grasp of.
That doesn't sound very in-character.
Yes, although I have roleplayed for a few years, I've never done it in Eve, and I'm not familiar enough to make solid judgments about it. Hence, why I'm willing to concede that other players have greater authority in this situation than I do. I'm just trying to grasp a better understanding here, and I thank several of the posters in this topic for helping me.
Speaking of which, I really like Octavinus Augustus' ideas. For my own character, I've found that fighting for the Amarr Empire always made the most sense, simply because my character has depended so much on friendly relations between Caldari and Gallente, and has lived in the Amarr Empire for a while, but has no ties to the Minmatar Republic whatsoever.
Oh hey, guess I do sorta roleplay a little in Eve... at least, my character has a story behind him. Wish I knew all of it...
Anywho, I'm just spouting nonsense now. ---
